Conservative Group Express Deep Disappointment Following Rejection of Sheltered Housing
Motion

The Conservative Group at Charnwood Borough Council last night expressed its profound
disappointment after the Labour–Green coalition voted against a motion aimed at safeguarding the
future of sheltered housing provision in the borough.

The motion called for a pause in the disposal of five sheltered housing schemes, representing 179
homes for older residents, to allow for a full and detailed exploration of redevelopment options,
including accessing Government funding through the Social and A􀆯ordable Homes Programme.
Despite the clear evidence of growing demand for suitable older persons’ accommodation, and the
irreversible nature of selling o􀆯 these publicly owned sites, the coalition chose not to support further
investigation into retaining and improving this vital provision.

Councillors also raised serious concerns regarding the tone of parts of the debate, with remarks made
that appeared dismissive of the needs and experiences of some of the borough’s most vulnerable
residents—many of whom are already facing displacement from their homes and communities as a
result of these decisions.

Speaking after the meeting, Cllr Sarah Monk said:
“We are extremely disappointed that the Labour–Green coalition has chosen not to take the
opportunity to fully explore all available options before proceeding with the loss of these sheltered
housing schemes. This was a reasonable and constructive motion that sought to ensure we were
making the best long-term decision for residents and taxpayers alike.
Most importantly, this is about people — older residents who rely on safe, supportive accommodation
to live independently with dignity, and future residents who will need that same support. Once these
homes are gone, they are gone for good.

We also feel it is important to reflect on the tone of the debate. Some of the comments made did not
fully recognise the vulnerability of the residents a􀆯ected, and we believe our community deserves a
more compassionate and considered approach when discussing such significant changes.”
The Conservative Group remains committed to advocating for the protection and improvement of
housing for older residents and will continue to press for policies that prioritise prevention,
independence, and community wellbeing.
