Nicky Morgan MP elected Vice-Chair of the Westminster based All Party Parliamentary Group for Athletics in bid to strengthen links between sporting community and Parliament
Recognising the importance of sports for the Loughborough constituency, running enthusiast Nicky Morgan MP is delighted to have been elected as Vice-Chair of the Westminster based All Party Parliamentary Group for Athletics, and pledges to use her role to represent the interests of sport lovers from right across the constituency in Parliament. She has previously spoken openly about her aim of encouraging more families to get involved in sport and her own efforts to set a positive example to her infant son by promoting a healthy lifestyle at home. ‘Constituents will recognise that I have utilised my passion for both running and volunteering simultaneously to raising funds for numerous local and national charities over the years, such as; Rainbows, Cancer UK and Carpenters Arms. I want to use this role to help promote exercise locally because of all the benefits that it can offer; it encourages positivity and clarity of mind, it is a great way to maintain a healthy appearance and superb is ideal for meeting new people living locally often in a healthy and often cost free environment”, said Nicky.
Formed to ‘protect and nurture the future of athletics, from grassroots to the elite, including disabled athletes’, the All Party Parliamentary Group for Athletics is responsible for scrutinising the Government’s work in sports related areas, often producing cross-party reports which are used to inform and influence other Members of Parliament. It regularly consults sports organisations and groups from across Britain and is influential in advising Members to changes of policy and attitude specific to this field through the keen supply of documentation, meetings and interactive events. Nicky has clearly indicated her desire to encourage sporting authorities to engage with the local community
Hosting the Japanese team in the 2012 Olympics will be a key opportunity to consolidate the constituency’s international reputation of which Nicky is also keen to take advantage. ‘On a local level, I am determined to make use of this role to not only ensure that the wants and needs of the professional and amateur sportsmen are met, but also the needs of those who have not yet allowed themselves to engage in sport. It is important to me to ensure that our town is left with a legacy of our own from acting as the host town for the Japanese team during the Olympics, and to welcome any opportunities that building relations with Japan may bring”, she concludes.
