 Fundraising success of Loughborough University revealed by local MP in Prime Ministers Questions and commended by PM
On 19 June Rag Chair, Jamie Oliver, revealed that hardworking Loughborough students had raised an astonishing £1,042,125.53 through the incredible fundraising efforts of volunteers across the campus. Commenting on this announcement Vice Chancellor of LU, Shirley Pearce, said ‘this is indeed a great achievement’. Recently elected Member of Parliament for the Loughborough constituency, Nicky Morgan, took the opportunity to commend the success of Loughborough University Students Union during Prime Minister’s Questions, receiving a response from the Prime Minister, she said:
Nicky Morgan (Loughborough) (Con): Will the Prime Minister join me in congratulating the Loughborough university student union rag committee, which as well as providing many volunteers to local groups has this year raised more than any other rag in the country-more than £1 million, including raising £34,000 in one day for the Royal British Legion? Is not this an example of the big society in action?
The Prime Minister: I thank my hon. Friend for her question. She is absolutely right. Sometimes students can get a bad press for what they do, but we can see from the example of Loughborough that they have focused on doing things for other people and raising money for charity. They should be congratulated.
The new Government has previously revealed plans to build a ‘Big Society’ based on responsibility and respect, in stark contrast with Labour’s Big Government built on paternalism and waste.
