 Recently elected Member of Parliament for the Loughborough constituency praises the contribution made to our communities by local markets and joins Markets APPG to learn more about the difficulties our traders face.
Loughborough and Shepshed markets are a valuable and historic part of our economy and culture and they attract thousands of shoppers from outside the constituency each year, particularly for the lively Christmas fair. Local Member of Parliament, Nicky Morgan, believes that these small traders deserve greater recognition of the contribution that they make to our communities and more Parliamentary support to help ensure markets can continue to thrive in this increasingly global economy. The All Party Parliamentary Group for Markets was set up ‘to provide a forum for traders and market operators in the public and private sector and to advise parliamentarians of the problems facing retail, wholesale and other markets.’ Nicky hopes to use her membership of this group to learn more about and raise awareness of the specific challenges faced by markets in the Loughborough constituency at this time. ‘I would like to support market traders in their work to ensure that the generations to come are able to enjoy the same markets that have been enjoyed in this constituency for almost 900 years’, she said.
Nicky has previously told Loughborough residents that it was the constituency’s warm and welcoming atmosphere and rich history that made her want to settle here and she has since made it clear that it is this sense of community that she wishes to work hard to protect. As a frequent visitor to the local markets Nicky is well known amongst traders and delights in the opportunity to take her growing son around the different stalls found in the towns on market days. ‘The excitement that the markets inject into our constituency is second to none with many of the goods that you find in the markets simply not available in larger stores and all at very reasonable prices. Market days are always a great family day out and something my son and I really look forwards to’, she said.
