Nicky Morgan recently visited Loughborough's RNIB College to discuss the important work that the charity and college carry out with blind and partially sighted people in this area.
When the Royal National institute for the Blind (RNIB) in Loughborough invited Nicky Morgan for a tour around their Radmoor Road base, the prospective Conservative MP for Loughborough was delighted to accept.
Visual impairment is a disability which can be overlooked because, as Nicky found out, it is not always obvious when someone has a problem with their sight. ‘I was shocked and saddened to hear some of the stories about the difficulties with diagnosis and treatment that those supported by the RNIB have faced', said Nicky. Whilst there are indeed many people who are born with blind or visually impaired, others suffer from illnesses or are involved with accidents which permanently damage their ability to see and the great thing about RNIB is that services are built specifically for each student’s needs to ensure the best possible service is provided. Nicky was given a tour of the building and demonstrations of the equipment used at the college by staff to help students achieve their full potential. 'I am amazed at how well the students at the college managed with their disabilities and I found their resilience and determination truly inspiring', said Nicky Morgan.
The charity provides a range of different services for children and adults of all ages from further education programmes to adult employment programmes and without the hard work of RNIB staff and volunteers many individuals and families in this constituency would struggle to get by. ‘I cannot even begin to imagine the difficulties involved in dealing with this disability but I but I do know that, for many, RNIB in Loughborough makes this takes that little bit easier. Following the difficulties with the Learning and Skills Council funding and management last year the college raised the issue of their continuing funding with me and I am following this up with our Shadow Westminster Team.’, Nicky concludes.
