'Support Our Small Shops' says Nicky Morgan
Small shops are at the heart of our high streets and town centres. They offer diversity and choice and provide a really personal service to their community. Yet in many communities these independent retailers are under threat. They face a rising burden of regulation and tax, a daily battle against crime and violence, and competition from the growth of out-of-town shopping centres. It is estimated that 2000 shops close every year.
Only recently it emerged that between September 2008 and September 2009 the Loughborough constituency suffered from an astonishing 98% rise in unemployment. The result of almost 18 months of recession, the longest period since the war; has been devastating for too many. Nicky Morgan believes that more could and should be done to try and prevent more job losses and more small shops and business from closing and this is why she has launched the Support Our Small Shops Campaign in this constituency.
Why Get Involved?
This competition is looking for Loughborough's favourite shop. If you want your shop to have the honour of being named 'Loughborough (constituency)'s favourite shop' or you want to give your favourite shop the chance to win this title- then GET INVOLVED.
Loughborough's favourite shop will be invited to a special meeting to be presented with an award by Ken Clarke MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Business. ALL shops that are entered and nominated will appear in Loughborough's Favourite Shops Directory which will be produced after the deadline has passed.
